Hai phong Geography

Haiphong is a large city with an important seaport of Vietnam. Haiphong is near Quang Ninh Province to the north, Hai Duong Province to the west, and Thai Binh Province to the south.

Haiphong Climate: Because of the proximity to the East Sea, Haiphong's weather is affected by inter-tropical monsoons. The annual average temperature varies between 23ºC and 24ºC.

Hai phong has many temples, pagodas, mausoleums and shrines such as ancient Du Hang Pagoda, Nghe Temple, Hang Kenh Communal House... Haiphong has famous historical Bach Dang River, where the national heroes defeated three Chinese feudal invasions. The third victory over the Yuan-Mongolians was known all over the world. Many of the teakwood pointed spikes have been discovered in this river. Haiphong is on tourism route: Hanoi - Haiphong - Halong Bay. Do Son Beach, located 20km from Haiphong, is a sand strip for bathing. However, during the monsoon season,the Red River's alluvial sands cause the water to turn yellow. From Do Son, tourist can visit Cat Ba National Park, and continue to Bai Tu Long Bay and Halong Bay (Quang Ninh Province). Haiphong is also famous for many festivals, of which Choi Trau Festival (Do Son Buffalo-fighting festival) in Do Son District is unique.

Haiphong is served by an important transportation network of sea routes, roads, railways, and airlines.

Road: The National Highway No. 10 links Haiphong to the provinces of Quang Ninh, Thai Binh and Thanh Hoa. Haiphong is 102km from Hanoi.

Airlines: There are connecting daily flights with Ho chi Minh City, departed from Cat Bi Airport.

Railway: There are trains from Hanoi to Haiphong and vice versa.

Boat: Daily ferries from the dock on Ben Binh St. for other destinations. The ferry runs from Haiphong to Cat Ba Island several times a day. The hydrofoil boats run between Haiphong - Cat Ba and Haiphong - Hon Gai. The high-speed air-condition Thong Nhat Boat leave daily from Haiphong to Cat Ba.

Cat Ba Island, Vietnam is home to the Cat Ba National Park. The Cat Ba National Park covers an area of nearly 200 square kilometers. It has both forests and water bodies within its boundaries. The national park is an attraction to the tourists who enjoy hiking. To the east of the island is the Lan Ha Bay. This bay is famous for its excellent beaches and breathtaking scenery. The Cat Ba Island is home to two white sand beaches both located one kilometer from Cat Ba town. They are Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2. These two beaches are interconnected by a seven hundred meters long wooden walkway.

Cat Ba Island, Vietnam is rich in flora and fauna. There are more than 600 different kinds of plants in this island. The wide variety of trees includes Bang, Goi Nep, Sang Le and Kim Giao. The island is filled with animals of rare species like the white headed langurs, deers and macaques. It is home to a number of sea animals like sea turtles, lobsters, coral, oysters and dolphins. All these features have turned Cat Ba Island into one of the major Vietnam popular destinations

Best time to visit

The best time during the year to visit the Cat Ba Island, Vietnam is October and November. The weather is best during this time of the year. During these two months the island experiences a pleasant weather to enjoy the national park, to walk on the beaches and absorb the stunning beauty of the island. Temperatures drop from December onwards thus having a chilly weather. March and April are wet, and June, July and August are hot with a high percentage of humidity.

Getting there

To get to Cat Ba Island one can travel from Hanoi, Vietnam to Hai phong by train or bus and then to Cat Ba by a boat. One can travel directly to Halong Bay, Vietnam from Hanoi, Vietnam by a chartered helicopter and from there to Cat Ba by boat.

There are a number of agents who arrange for trips to the Cat Ba Island and ensure that your sightseeing in Vietnam is as hassle-free and as enjoyable as possible. Even hotels and cafes in Hanoi, Vietnam too arrange for tours to the island.


There are certainly a lot of markets to walk around.


Shoes - Along the Nguyen Duc Canh street/road which is south of the Ho Tam Bac man made pond, you will find many shoe stores. A highly recommend shoe store is "Shop Cuong Lien" located at 87 Nguyen Duc Canh street/road, the store carries many styles of brand name runner and formal shoes. This shop is presentable and clean, compared to the other shoe stores on the same street.


  • "bánh đa cua"- a kind of noodle soup with crab and other traditional Vietnamese ingredients- really delicious, try once and u can't forget!
  • "bánh bèo"- a white cake made from rice, filled with meat and eaten together with special sauce
  • "bún tôm"- a kind of noodle soup, with shrimp
  • "chè bưởi"- sweetened porridge, made of beans, glutinous rice and mostly grapefruit,often added with coconut sauce and dry-salted coconut slices


Lipton Ice Tea - a branded Lipton tea bag in a narrow drinking glass filled with drinking water with sugar and ice cubes added. Makes it a refreshing alternative to coffee.

Get out

  • Ha Long Bay
  • Do Son (beach) — about 20-23 km away from Hai Phong. Do Son is resort frequented by the Vietnamese but by few westerners; the beaches are not the greatest as silt affects the quality of the water. A visit to nearby Cat Ba is advisable if you want to swim, as the water quality is much better. Do Son sits along the ocean coast, and is filled with low-end hotels, restaurants, and karaoke bars. It has a repuatation as a centre for prostitution. There is a casino (one of very few in Vietnam) at the Do Son Resort Hotel. It's worth visiting for a peaceful day or two away from the bustle of Haiphong.
  • Hanoi — about 100-105 km away from Hai Phong, about 2-3 hour car ride.
